When you have your tub reglazed/refinished, it’s important to be aware of the increased risk of slips and falls due to the smooth and shiny finish. To mitigate this risk, using a non-skid mat is highly recommended. Ensuring your safety is our top priority, and selecting the right mat will not only protect you from falls but also help maintain the longevity of your refinished tub. Always choose mats without suction cups to avoid damaging the new finish.

What happens when you use a mat with suction cups on the Refinished/Reglazed tub?

Using a mat with suction cups is not recommended for any reglazed or refinished tub, as it can damage the finish. Over time, the suction cups can lift the coating, leading to peeling. Most deterioration of a refinished tub occurs due to user negligence, with the improper use of non-skid mats with suction cups being a common issue. If the tub is damaged due to the use of mat with suction cups, it will automatically void your warranty.

How to Fix the peeling tub after the use of mat with suction cups!

If a tub peels due to the use of a mat with suction cups, the only solution is usually to strip the tub. Mat with suction cups often cause significant harm over time. We will need to apply a paint remover or stripper to eliminate the old coating. This process involves stripping the tub down to its original surface and redoing the entire refinishing process, including etching, masking the surrounding tiles and floors, sanding, repairing any chips or rust, priming, and applying the top coat. Following our instructions is crucial to ensure the longevity of the refinished tub.

However, fiberglass tubs cannot be stripped. Instead, we will sand down and repair the peeling areas using bondo to seal them. While fiberglass may not be as durable as porcelain or cast iron, which can be stripped before refinishing, it will still provide a satisfactory finish.

Alternative non-skid options can be used for refinished tubs.

There are options available for applying non-skid surfaces to the bottom of a tub without using mats with suction cups. Amazon offers non-skid mats specifically designed for refinished or reglazed tubs, typically costing around $30-$40. These mats are safe to use because they lack suction cups, and they can be easily removed, cleaned, or aired out after each use. Many consumers find these mats convenient and affordable.

Alternatively, you can have us, your vendor, install a non-skid surface on the bottom of the tub. One method we offer involves applying sand to the bottom, but over time, the sand can collect dirt, come off, and cause discoloration. Although this is a less expensive option, we don’t highly recommend it.

The best method is to have us install a stationary mat on the bottom of the tub. While this mat is white and may not perfectly match your newly reglazed tub, it provides a durable non-skid surface that cannot be removed. This mat is about 3 feet long and offers the best solution for ensuring safety and longevity. Additionally, these mats serve as a barrier for water, especially if you have rust on the bottom of the tub, helping to prevent rust from recurring.
